Michael Henry, M.D., has been named president of the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC), the premier U.S. professional society for cytopathology. For the last two years, Dr. Henry has served as vice president and president elect, and this year, he will serve as president of ASC, overseeing the general management of the society and its committees.

Dr. Henry is a Consultant in the Division of Anatomic Pathology and holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. He is the current Director of General Cytopathology at Mayo Clinic and is also the Medical Director of the Cytotechnology Program within the Mayo School of Health-Related Sciences, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Henry received his bachelor’s degree in biology/chemistry from Bemidji State and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He completed his residency at the Naval Hospital in San Diego and a cytology fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York. He had a 24- year career in the United States Naval Medical Corps, spending much of his time at the Bethesda Naval Hospital where he was director of cytology, program director of the combined Navy-Army anatomic and clinical pathology residency program, and also the program director of the cytology fellowship program. After retiring from the Navy in 2000, Dr. Henry spent time as director of cytology at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Henry’s medical interests include cytopathology, gynecologic cytology, fine-needle aspiration cytology, and gynecologic pathology. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on various cytology topics and has held offices in several national pathology organizations. He has written widely and is the co-author of the College of American Pathologists Practical Guide to Gynecologic Cytopathology.
