October 1987: Florida Campus Reflects on First Year of Operation #throwbackthursdays

On Oct. 13, 1987, Mayo Clinic Jacksonville celebrated its first anniversary. Crucial support from the parent clinic in Rochester gave Mayo Clinic Jacksonville a successful start.

In its first year, Mayo’s first satellite clinic had tallied 11,098 patient registrations from 47 states and 17 foreign countries, with about 70 percent recognized as new Mayo patients. The famous “Mayo checkup,” or general medical examination, accounted for about half of the patient visits.

“The dedication of the initial Jacksonville staff, both medical and paramedical, was absolutely tremendous,” said Dr. Thane Cody, chairman, Mayo Clinic Jacksonville board of governors in 1987. “Their flexibility and willingness to stay with an incredibly demanding project set the course for this clinic. Even in the early days, when challenges were greatest, our patients were pleased with their medical care.

“Now Mayo Clinic Jacksonville is also benefiting from the continued commitment shown by our new people as we grow. Together, we can all feel a sense of pride in what’s been accomplished here. Every single person has played an important role in bringing Mayo Clinic Jacksonville to where it is today.”

Mayo Clinic Jacksonville’s first year resulted in healthy growth:

  • The initial staff of 35 physicians and 160 paramedical personnel grew to 56 physicians and 330 paramedicals.
  • “No vacancy” was the general space situation in the four-story clinic building.
  • Affiliation with St. Luke’s Hospital, a 289-bed hospital, hosted all Mayo Clinic Jacksonville patients requiring hospitalization.
  • The development of Mayo’s radiation oncology facility expanded the clinic’s existing oncology services.
  • A Courtyard by Marriott hotel opened on Mayo property to provide convenient accommodations for Mayo patients.
