This presentation will cover the basics of blood gas testing in the pediatric setting; why it is performed and what sample types can be used. Specific focus will be placed on capillary and umbilical cord blood sampling and interpretation.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the basic interpretation of blood gas results.
  • Recognize the clinical need for testing, unique challenges for sample draw, and interpretation of results for umbilical cord blood sampling for blood gases.
  • Cite the clinical need for testing, unique challenges for sample draw, and interpretation of results for capillary sampling for blood gases.

Dr. Leslie Donato is the co-director or the Cardiovascular Laboratory Medicine (CVLM) and co-director of the Hospital Clinical Laboratory (HCL) and Point of Care. She earned her PhD from Cornell University in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology and completed a basic science post-doctoral research position at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She completed the Clinical Chemistry fellowship at Mayo Clinic in 2012 and joined the staff at Mayo Clinic immediately following completion of her fellowship.
