Recently, the Packaging and Specimen Kit Orders (SKO) areas within Mayo Medical Laboratories (MML) received the 2015 Business Partner of the Year award from the Ability Building Center (ABC) in Rochester. This is the fourth time that MML has received this award.
How MML Packaging and SKO Work with ABC
The MML Packaging and SKO work units play an important role in providing service to MML clients. These two units fill an average of 3,300 supply requests each month and build 3,500 packages with kits that are sent to transportation couriers and MML clients throughout the world.
Between September 1, 2014, and September 1, 2015, 127 ABC participants provided over 25,000 hours of work for MML Packaging and SKO. They built 46 different kits and mailers and worked on numerous tasks, which varied from placing stickers on bags to the complexity of building a T628 Kit QuantiFERON.
The Ability Building Center began in 1957. Its mission is to improve the quality of life in Southeastern Minnesota by providing rehabilitation and employment services for persons with disabilities and other special needs. The organization has been partnering with MML since 1974, first with ABC staff sewing drapes for the laboratories located in the Hilton Building. In 1978, ABC participants began building boxes to be used in the transportation department.
At a short awards ceremony at the Superior Drive Support Center, Operations Manager Tom Griffin thanked the groups for their hard work and dedication to community engagement and told staff, “It’s amazing that we are able to provide 25,000 hours of work to this community.”
“Our work doesn’t stop at the door,” added Operations Administrator John Butz. “I’m proud to say it reaches out into the community and provides jobs in a safe, supportive environment.”
Congratulations to the MML Packaging and SKO work units on receiving this significant award.
