Marti Schommer Receives Mayo Clinic Individual Award for Service Excellence

Marti Schommer, Technical Specialist II in the Clinical Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, was recently awarded the prestigious Mayo Clinic Individual Award for Service Excellence for her long-time demonstration of Mayo Clinic values. Schommer’s husband and two of their children surprised her at the ceremony where she received the award.

Paula Zollman, Schommer’s colleague of 10 years, nominated her for the award because of her exceptional dedication to her work and her team. “Marti goes above and beyond to get the job done, regardless of time constraints or resources,” said Zollman.

When asked what it’s like to work with Marti, Tom Hartman, her supervisor, said, “Marti has been an outstanding mentor and role model and has dedicated a large portion of her life to serving our patients. She makes an impact every day she comes to work, and we are fortunate to have such a loyal and compassionate person on our team. Marti does whatever is necessary to keep the laboratory moving forward and ensure our patients get the care they deserve.”

“I am very humbled to be singled out for doing what so many others do every day,” said Schommer. “I am truly honored to receive this award and to work with such an amazing group of peers.”

Marti Schommer began her career at Mayo as a laboratory technologist in the Endocrine Laboratory in 1989. She was promoted to technical specialist I in 2006 and technical specialist II this past October.

About the Award
All consulting/voting staff, allied health staff, students, and volunteers at Mayo Clinic are eligible for this award. The Individual Award for Service Excellence is reserved for the top 1% to 2% of all Mayo Clinic employees and can be received only once during their Mayo career.

Candidates must have three or more years of service at Mayo and exhibit high standards of ethics and performance. Multiple examples of outstanding service are required as well as interpersonal skills that demonstrate respect and support for people and for Mayo’s goals and mission statement—the needs of the patient come first. The award recipients are high achievers, and they know how to tackle difficult challenges. More importantly, their good work inspires and motivates others.
