Diva Salomão, M.D., Named Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Diversity Leader

Diva Salomão, M.D., has been named the Diversity Leader for the Mayo Clinic Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP).

In this role, Dr. Salomão will partner with Nathan Van Brunt, Administrator, DLMP Operations, to help to identify and address department-specific needs and priorities related to diversity, inclusion, and health equity. With this appointment, Dr. Salomão will meet regularly with the Rochester Department Diversity Leaders and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and she will also become a member of the DLMP Leadership Committee.

Dr. Salomão received her medical degree from the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, in Brazil, where she also completed a residency in anatomic pathology and a fellowship in surgical pathology at the National Cancer Institute in Rio De Janeiro. Dr. Salomão proceeded to finish her AP/CP residency and surgical pathology fellowship at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in cytopathology at the University of Iowa, where she had the opportunity to work at the F. C. Blodi Eye Pathology Laboratory, being mentored by Robert Folberg, M.D.

Dr. Salomão joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 1998 and became a consultant in 2000 with a joint appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and the Department of Ophthalmology. She holds the academic rank of Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.

Dr. Salomão’s clinical interests focus on ophthalmic pathology and cytopathology with an emphasis on fine-needle aspiration and neoplasms of the eye and periocular tissues. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and a number of book chapters and abstracts. She is a dedicated educator, with great participation in the education of our trainees at DLMP and trainees in the Ophthalmology Department. She was the surgical pathology fellowship program director from 2009–2015, and still plays a role on a number of education related committees. In 2003, she was named Teacher of the Year in Laboratory Medicine and Pathology from the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education.

Gina Chiri-Osmond

Gina Chiri-Osmond is a Marketing Channel Manager at Mayo Medical Laboratories. She manages public relations and media outreach. Gina has worked at Mayo Clinic since 2011. Outside of work, Gina is going for gold in volleyball at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo . . . or at small-town summer festivals.
