Ross Reichard, M.D., Named DLMP Vice Chair of Quality and Associate Chair of Practice

R. Ross Reichard, M.D., has been appointed the new Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) Vice Chair of Quality and Associate Chair of Practice, effective June 28, 2017. These two leadership positions were created by the DLMP Chair with endorsement from the Executive Committee of DLMP and Mayo Medical Laboratories.

In the Vice Chair of Quality role, Dr. Reichard will partner with Ms. Lynn Padley, Administrator, DLMP Quality, to oversee quality activities for the entire department in Rochester. They will provide guidance to DLMP Quality Management Services, laboratory directors, and laboratory management staff to assure patient safety, high-quality laboratory testing, and compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. An important component of this role will be a strong focus on continual improvement and value creation for DLMP.

As the Associate Chair of Practice, Dr. Reichard will work collaboratively with the Vice Chair of Practice Matthew Binnicker, Ph.D., to oversee standardization and/or coordination of clinical practice processes and procedures among divisions; direct resource allocation to support the clinical practice; and manage quality systems to measure clinical practice effectiveness, efficiency, quality, and safety throughout DLMP.

Dr. Reichard joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2011 as a Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. He is now a Consultant (Division of Anatomic Pathology) and holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. Dr. Reichard currently serves as Medical Director of Mayo’s Office of Decedent Affairs, Co-Director of the Autopsy Laboratory, and Vice Chair the AP Clinical Practice Platform. He is also the Chief Medical Examiner of the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Dr. Reichard’s clinical interests focus on pediatric traumatic brain injuries, forensic neuropathology, and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Reichard is an esteemed national and international presenter, and he has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts. He is an active educator, mentoring more than 15 fellows and residents throughout his career, and is the outgoing Chair of Education for the American Association of Neuropathologists (AANP). He is also a member of the American Board of Pathology Forensic Pathology Test Development Committee, the Chair of CAP’s Forensic Pathology Resource Committee, and Vice President-elect of the AANP.

Dr. Reichard received his undergraduate degree in anthropology from Centre College of Kentucky and a master’s degree in anatomical sciences and neurobiology from the University of Louisville. He earned his doctorate from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed postdoctoral training in anatomic pathology and neuropathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Stanford University. He also completed a forensic pathology fellowship at the University of New Mexico.
