This presentation will focus on the establishment of a formal training program for new hires and will include a discussion regarding the design of the training program to meet the needs of the organization. Identifying these needs will include reviewing patient demographics as well as institutional policies, procedures, and collection methodologies. Information regarding the training process will discuss the importance of the didactics and clinical portions of the training regimen. The discussion will also reveal how to design a competency assessment plan that will assure that phlebotomists maintain their skill sets in providing quality patient care, as well as explain how to implement and document these assessments.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify training needs based on patient demographics and institutional requirements.
- Identify training methodologies, including academics and clinical rotations.
- Recognize the role of the clinical preceptor/trainer.
- Design a competency assessment plan.
This series is appropriate for phlebotomists, phlebotomy managers, phlebotomy educators, and other patient care staff involved in specimen collection.
Education Specialist I
Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology
Randy Gruhlke is an Education Specialist for the Clinical Core Laboratory Services (CCLS) Division of Mayo Clinic’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP). He is also the Associate Program Director of the Phlebotomy Technician Program for the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences and holds the academic rank of Instructor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Randy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business/management and a Master of Science degree in management from Cardinal Stritch University. Prior to earning his master’s, Randy completed the Licensed Practical Nurse Program at Rochester Area Vocational School and then received his associate’s at Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC). From 2001 to 2002, Randy was an adjunct faculty member at RCTC, teaching the phlebotomy course offered at that time.
Randy has been with Mayo Clinic for more than 17 years. During this time, Randy has worked within the CCLS Division of DLMP, working in both the outpatient and inpatient clinical settings, including time with the Vascular Access Team (VAT) in several intensive care units. Randy’s management experience includes working as a lead technician with Baldwin Laboratory Services and as an assistant supervisor with both the Eisenberg Laboratory Services and VAT at Mayo. In 2008, Randy joined the Phlebotomy Education Team as an Education Specialist.
