This presentation will provide step-by-step instructions on how investing in less than 15 minutes a day will result in a culture transformation. It begins by engaging frontline staff in the planning and improvement of the work that affects them during a daily huddle at the huddle board, i.e., Grand Central Station. Highlighted is the role of the leader in a Lean management system (LMS) whose responsibility is to coach others to use the scientific method of problem-solving to achieve measureable improvements that align with the organization’s strategies. Discover that at the core of an LMS is respect for every individual, which translates into leader and peer-to-peer recognition for living the values—the missing piece of the puzzle needed to foster healthy relationships and strengthen teamwork to achieve performance excellence. This takes longer than a “New York minute” because a Lean transformation is a journey, not a destination.
Senior Systems Engineer

Heidi Miksanek is a Senior Systems Engineer in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and started working at Mayo Clinic in 2001. She supports the Lean management system and continuous-improvement activities of the clinical laboratories throughout the Mayo Clinic Health System and in Rochester. Heidi has previous laboratory management experience in the division of Anatomic Pathology. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Winona State University, a Master of Science degree in project management from St. Mary’s University, and is Six Sigma Black Belt-certified through the American Society of Quality. Heidi holds the academic rank of Instructor within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and has been on the Mayo Quality Academy faculty since 2011, teaching continual-improvement principles, methods, and tools.

- Summarize lessons learned from the process in order to transform from a culture of leaders solving the day-to-day problems to a culture of frontline employees engaged in the planning and improvement of the work that affects them.
- Discuss the knowledge and materials needed to begin huddles as part of a Lean transformation that begins by engaging frontline staff in tandem with engaging leaders to coach others in developing their problem-solving skills. This transformation will help make improvements that align with the organization’s goals to achieve performance excellence.
This series is appropriate for laboratory administrators and managers, quality assurance and control staff, supervisors, and other laboratory personnel who are dedicated to continuous quality and process improvement.
