THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSIDERING AN AUTOIMMUNE ETIOLOGY
Because of the potential benefit of early-initiated immunotherapy, it is essential that an autoimmune etiology be considered in the initial differential diagnosis of new onset dementias, encephalopathies, and epilepsies. Early treatment, and maintenance immunotherapy where appropriate, assures an optimal outcome for the patient. Informative serological testing may also expedite the search for a limited stage cancer.
The Mayo Clinic Neuroimmunology Laboratory is focused on autoimmunity affecting the brain, optic nerve, retina, spinal cord, autonomic and somatic nerves and muscle. The laboratory continues to discover and clinically validate novel autoantibody profiles that inform neurological decision-making and guide the search for cancer. The neuroimmunology laboratory also complements Mayo Clinic’s Autoimmune Neurology Clinic.
